Blackbutt Loop

Head west out of Brisbane on the Warrego Hwy to the Pine Mountain Road turnoff.

Follow Pine Mountain Road (bitumen) north until it intersects the Brisbane Valley Hwy, just south of Fernvale.  Just north of Fernvale, turn right onto Wivenhoe-Somerset Road. This is a really nice bitumen ride all the way to Somerset Village, where you can enjoy a coffee break in really nice surroundings.

From there, go south out of the Village and backtrack past the intersection where you came out of, Wivenhoe-Somerset Road. Follow Esk-Kilcoy Road, then turn north and ride through farmland on Cooeeimbardi Road to Toogoolawah. Not far west of Toogoolawah, you start the dirt section of this ride.

Heading over to Esk-Crows Nest Road, continue west until Maria Creek Road and turn right.  These gravel roads will take you through some amazing country.  Maria Creek Road turns into McGreevy Road then turn right into Nukinenda Road, which then becomes Waterhole Gully Road.

Now it’s time to go into cruise mode and take in the scenery. This road could have you completely forgetting where you are; you would swear you were hundreds of kilometres inland, as you ride through this countryside.

On the northern end of Waterhole Gully Road, there is a steep descent into a gorge and it is best taken very, very slowly, as there are lots of ruts.

Continue north and you will find yourself in Blackbutt, enjoying the awesome bakery, the pub, or café and eatery.  From Blackbutt, it’s a highway run down the Great Divide to turn south onto the Brisbane Valley Hwy or continue east to the northside of Brisbane.
