Tenterfield Loop

We’ll start this one at Woodenbong, close to the Qld/NSW border. Riding west out of Woodenbong, for a couple of kilometres, we turn left into Beaury Creek Road (dirt). Beaury Creek Road initially runs south through bushland, but very quickly opens up into a typical northern NSW lush green valley, walled by steep hills to the east and west.

Continue south to Taloom Road where the valley opens up into rolling farmland and turn right. At Upper Taloom, turn left into Paddy’s Flat Road.  Paddy’s Flat Road runs through a lot of bushland but every now and again, opens up to reveal fantastic views.   At Paddy’s Flat, the road drops down into the Clarence River Valley, where you cross via a typical NSW backroad wooden slat bridge.

There are some interesting and odd facts surrounding Paddy’s Flat - well worth a visit to Google before you do this ride.

The southern side of the valley rises fairly steeply, soon returning to bitumen and heading south to Tabulam. At Tabulam, we turn west on the Bruxner Hwy.  Follow the Bruxner Hwy until Drake and turn south onto Long Gully Road.

As this road turns west, it becomes Rocky River Road.  The two roads combined are one of the nicest rides in OZ, in my opinion.  Around 80 kms of twists and turns have you following the Rocky River back toward Tenterfield, on a narrow granitic sand road.

Tenterfield has a large amount of accommodation and food options for your enjoyment.  It’s a great place to stop for lunch or overnight.  North out of Tenterfield, there are a few options, but if time is not on your side, Mount Lindsay Road is a great ride.  Mount Lindsay Road is the old Cobb & Co stage coach route and there is a small museum in Liston, that is well worth stopping to have a look at.

Continuing north to Legume, Mount Lindsay Road turns east and snakes its way along the top of the range back to Woodenbong. There are a lot of other really nice loops in this area, some of which can incorporate parts of this ride.  Some of these loops will be covered in Rusty’s rides soon.
